In our last chat, we figured out our hair’s unique type and texture. Now, it’s time to tackle one of the most debated questions in all of haircare: how often should you be washing your hair?
The answer you’ve probably heard—”every two to three days”—is a good starting point, but it’s not the whole story. The truth is, the perfect washing schedule is a personal balance that depends entirely on your hair type, texture, and lifestyle. Washing too often can strip your hair of its natural, protective oils, while washing too little can lead to buildup on the scalp.
Let’s break it down in a simple way.
If You Have Fine or Straight Hair:
Your hair’s challenge is often oil. Because your hair strands are straight, the natural oils from your scalp can travel down the hair shaft very easily, making your hair look greasy faster.
- Your Ideal Schedule: You will likely feel best washing your hair every day or every other day. If you work out daily, a daily wash with a gentle shampoo is perfectly fine.
If You Have Medium or Wavy Hair:
You’re in a bit of a sweet spot. Your hair isn’t as prone to oiliness as straight hair, but it also doesn’t get as dry as curly hair.
- Your Ideal Schedule: Washing every 2 to 4 days is usually perfect. This gives your natural oils enough time to travel down your wavy strands and provide some moisture without weighing your hair down.
If You Have Coarse or Curly Hair:
Your hair’s main challenge is dryness. The oils from your scalp have a much harder time navigating the twists and turns of your curls to moisturize the ends. Over-washing is your biggest enemy.
- Your Ideal Schedule: Aim to wash your hair only 1 to 3 times per week. Many people with curly hair also practice “co-washing,” which means washing only with conditioner to preserve moisture.
If You Have Coily Hair:
Your hair is the most fragile and prone to dryness. Preserving moisture is your number one goal. Shampoo should be used sparingly.
- Your Ideal Schedule: Washing once a week or even every two weeks is often ideal. In between washes, you can rinse your hair with water and refresh it with a leave-in conditioner to keep it hydrated.
Listen to Your Hair
These are guidelines, not strict rules. The most important thing you can do is listen to your own body. Does your scalp feel itchy or greasy? It’s probably time to wash. Do your ends feel dry and brittle? Maybe stretch the time between washes and add more moisture.
Finding your perfect rhythm is a simple, personal ritual that lays the foundation for a healthy relationship with your hair.
